The Wait

Well, not a whole lot happening here. We're just hanging out and waiting for Porkchop to make his grand entrance. Kelly came in to town yesterday, I've been cooking and we've been running around doing stuff.

But that's it.

I do want to mention that I forgot a couple of movies in my top 10. The Fountain was one of the best made films of the past few years. A lot of folks found it pretentious and hated it, but I loved it. Also Zach Braff's movie The Last Kiss really spoke to me. It's about a guy who kind of freaks out when he finds out his fiancee is pregnant. I highly recommend it.

Also the records in rotation to the left has been updated. How did this record get by me?

David Gilmore is a really great guitar player that has been on the scene for a while. He has a really intense tone, don't let the smooth jazz-esque cover fool you, he always rocks it. And the band? The Band! The record features Jeff 'Tain' Watts on drums and the one and only Christian McBride on bass. Christian told me about the record when I was in NYC, I thought it would be out later this year but in fact it came out months ago. A record like this should've been on my radar. It's some bad stuff.

Movies

After seeing yet another terrible romantic comedy that my wife dragged me to I've decided to give up on the entire genre. This weekend's celluloid torture du jour was Music and Lyrics. I thought since the premise of this one was songwriting that it might be able to amuse me, but no. I'm serious I think the only good romantic comedy I've seen is When Harry Met Sally, everything after that has been crap. And every time I'm a good sport and optimistic that maybe this will be the one romantic comedy to go against the grain and be worth the hour-and-a-half of my time I spent watching it ... no good deed goes unpunished.

So while the movie left me pining for the good films I've seen over the past year and with the Oscars right around the corner I present my top 10 films of 2006. Carrie doesn't think that I've seen ten movies over the past year, it seems that sitting through Must Love Dogs with her isn't enough and I don't see as my movies as she would like. But after some recollecting I have seen over ten movies, and here are the best complete with one-line Entertainment Weekly-like reviews:

10. Hostel-Blood, guts, tits, and ass ... campy gross-out horror lives!
9. Inside Man-Denzel and Clive are studs.
8. Little Miss Sunshine-A fun movie but not as great as everyone is making it out to be. Did every character have to be so over-the-top?
7. An Inconvenient Truth-Al is speaking the truth, everyone needs to listen! (although I could've done without all of the thoughtful, brooding shots of him at his laptop)
6. Talledega Nights-"I like to think of Jesus with giant eagle's wings singing lead vocals for Lynyrd Skynyrd with an angel band, and I'm in the front row and I'm hammered drunk."
5. Borat-Actually lived up to all of the hype.
4. Science of Sleep-I'm a sucker for Gondry.
3. Children of Men-Would've been my #1 if it had been released in one of the past few years.
2. Pan's Labyrinth-Unique, creative, and innovative storytelling.
1. The Departed-This is what so many movies try to be. It's an epic and Shakespearean tragedy with excellent acting, directing, and writing.

Those top three will be classics in my mind. And there's still a lot of films I haven't seen. Great year for movies.

(And if you haven't noticed, there's a new look at IMDB, check it out)

Bald is Beautiful

If you haven't heard yet, Britney Spears has shaved her head. I guess her girl parts ain't the only thing she's been shaving! (obvious I know, but still funny) I know most of us couldn't care less about what Britney Spears does, but we might be witnessing a meltdown of Mariah Carey or Tom Cruise-like proportions. See for yourself.

Man, am I gaying it up lately or what? First I gush over John Mayer then I post some Hollywood gossip like I'm Perez Hilton. As if using three hair products a day wasn't gay enough!

More John Mayer Hilarity

The first time I realized how much I liked John Mayer was when I saw this special on VH1 called 'John Mayer has a TV Show'. It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen. You can find a few clips of it on YouTube but not all of them unfortunately. Here's a good one.

Blogroll, holla holla!

So I've tinkered with some of my blog elements including updating the blogs and links sections to the left. So dig:

Bookish is my seestah-in-law's book blog. If I read 20% as much as she did maybe I could discuss more of her posts.

A Lot to Say About Nothing is Cousin Kathy's blog.

I have a man-crush on John Mayer. Not only is he a fantastic musician but he is really friggin' funny as well, just read his blog.

KAPA Radio is my Dad's radio station. His show is called 'Da Boloheads', you can listen on the site.

Miranda July is a video artist and director of the fascinating movie Me and You and Everyone We Know. Learning to Love You More is web project of hers where she gives assignments that the general public mails in pictures of. Hard to explain, just check it out.

I also added a list of records I'm listening to that I hope to update often.

This week is another busy week of work, I have gigs with T Wed.-Sat. (baby permitting of course). I've been dealing with serious allergy problems all weekend ... headache, congestion, etc. It's a drag but I think it's almost over.

Back to Life

Back to life, back to work, back to waiting for this baby to come.

I saw Pan's Labyrinth yesterday. Boy, what a great movie. My sister-in-law saw it and remarked how unexpectedly bloody and violent it was. While I had been interested in the movie and was a fan of the director (he directed Blade 2 as well) my interest was peeked after reading her take on it (am I twisted or what?). But it really is great; while it has it's share of violence it is by no means gratuitous, think a Grimm's Fairytale for adults. There have been some great movies this year. I'll do a top 10 list soon but I'm quite happy to see movies based on original and creative ideas being made again instead of the re-hashes and biopics that have been so popular lately.

For some odd reason I think I've been on East Coast time ever since coming back from NYC. Granted, I've been back to the east coast quite a bit since then, but when I'm home I've been going to bed at like 11:00 PM. That's pretty early for me man. It's odd; jet-lag from Japan gets me, jet-lag from the east coast is usually barely noticeable. But I'm not going to worry too much about it, my sleep schedule is going to get really tough in a few weeks.

Speaking of, big thanks to Kathy for sending Carrie and I a whole mess of DVDs including seasons of Homicide and The Wire for the long days/nights when the baby comes home. I haven't been too much of a television watcher for the past few years (aside from sports of course). Carrie and I got Digital Cable/On Demand when we moved, that and iTunes have made catching shows easier. I've watched the last season of Sopranos, both seasons of Weeds, and Big Love but that's about it. When I was in Miami Beach at bossman's condo the guys in the band I was staying with watched a bunch of stuff they Tivod. I was surprised at how many shows they watched but I guess it's pretty easy to stay current with Tivo. I think it would be nice but Carrie isn't in to it and it isn't really that important to me. I'll stick to watching Heroes on the old iPod and checking out the DVDs Kathy sent.

Well the Superbowl glow is slowly fading. I will never get tired of seeing highlights from the game or players getting interviewed (at the game there were souvenir seat cushions on every seat, attached was a pouch with some freebies in it including a "gift certificate" to download Superbowl highlights from iTunes, portable Superbowl baby!). I'm trying to figure out what to buy to commemorate the Colt's Championship. I'm definitely going to get the Sports Illustrated Commemorative booklet and DVD. I'm also going to get a nice, framed poster to put in my son's room. Carrie protests but she needs to face the fact that she's having a boy and he's going to be interested in boy things including football. HA!

Tomorrow I'm off to Palm Springs for a gig with Mistah Tyrell. There's a hotel provided so Carrie and the Murph Dizzle might come if they are up to it. If not there are some casinos out there, maybe I'll play some cards after the show.

Heh, 10:00 ... almost time for bed ...

Miami Re-cap

Well, well, I'm finally back home. What a week that was.

After the gigs I headed to Miami Beach to the boss's condo. Our keyboardist and his bro were hanging with us. Saturday, as reported before, we hit South Beach. We went back later that night and the place was hoppin'. There was a huge private party on the beach that Mark Anthony was performing at, you could see and hear it from the boardwalk. Afterward there was a fantastic fireworks display. But it was hard to hang out anywhere or get a beer, the place was just packed.

I heard some disturbing things from Bears fans including, "Peyton Manning sucks a dick," "Indiana is just a bunch of white trash," "I used to live in Indiana and it sucks", etc. (we all know who got the last laugh there).

Sunday was game day and I was pretty excited and anxious. We took a bus to the stadium with bossman's friends. We even had a police escort that cut a lot of time off of the trip (natch). When we arrived at the stadium I was impressed by the amount of Colts love everywhere, the team's fans really traveled well. As we walked to our seats on the club level I started to get really stoked. Our seats were by the suites , there were concession stands and lounge areas everywhere and it wasn't nearly as crowded as the rest of the stadium. And the seats, as you can tell from the pictures, were fantastic. After a burger and a briefly interesting pre-game it was game-time.

Colts lost the coin-toss, bad sign.
The rain really started to come down, bad sign.

When the Colts kicked off and Devin Hester caught the ball I could see him clear as day. He caught the ball on the opposite end of the field from me and as he broke through the first line of Colts defense it was if he was running directly toward me. He burned right down that field and stumbled in to the endzone right beneath me.

Bad sign.

But you know what? I never let it bother me. For whatever reason I wasn't nearly as nervous for this game as I had been for games past. It was this team's destiny to win. Destiny the Colts run defense that the media had touted as the worst in the league shut down the best between-the-tackles tailback in the NFL against Kansas City. Destiny the Colts beat the team in Baltimore where this team is hated and the quarterback was Manning's first big rival. Destiny that the Patriots came to the dome only to watch the Colts win the AFC Championship for the first time. Destiny that Peyton Manning would have to win the big game outside in the rain where it was popularly thought that he couldn't win.

I never lost hope. The Colts came clawing back. And by the time the second half was in full swing it was obvious that they were in control of their destiny. The game is kind of a blur for me, it went by so fast. With 20 seconds left on the clock I finally started to say to myself "is this really going to happen? Is Indianapolis really going to win a World Championship?"

And they did.

I was overcome. I was screaming. I was hugging strangers clad in white and blue.

After the game we went out to eat at a fantastic Cuban restaurant where I had a Scotch and we toasted the game. Monday I was so drained I didn't do much besides souvenir shop and watch highlights of the game. Yesterday I flew home and crashed early. I've watched highlights from the parade on TV, I really wish I could've been there. But I'm not going to get greedy, I had the perfect weekend, a football fan couldn't ask for anything more.

So as the glow of the game slowly fades all of us Colts fans can relish in the fact that we are World Champions for the next year. Ain't it great.

Miami Report

I got in to Miami this morning and quickly headed to South Beach to check out the Superbowl festivities. There were lots of things you'd expect; giveaways, street preachers, games, food, crowds of people, etc. But the model's volleyball tournament was quite a highlight and probably something unique to Miami.

I have to say I'm glad to see all of the Colts love. I figured there would be quite a few more Bears fans simply because the city is bigger and the Grossman-Gator connection. While there probably are more Bears fans, we aren't outnumbered by that much.

The weather is nice, I'm hoping it doesn't rain. I'm headed back to South Beach tonight for more madness.

I GOT A TICKET! I'M GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL!!

The boss came through. He's friends with the Tisch family, owners of the NY Giants. He got hooked up with tickets. I'm going to the game! Can you believe it?!

I plan on representing all of my friends and family who can't be there. I'll happily listen to any requests for photos and souvenirs.

Has this been a great year so far or what? My CD release show in Hollywood was fantastic, I have a healthy and pregnant wife with a son on the way, the Colts beat the Patriots in the playoffs, and I'm going to the Superbowl! Shit, the biggest disappointment so far was having to turn down the tour with Doc Severinsen, and I gladly did that! The word 'charmed' comes to mind.

GO BLUE!
