Fascinating Sopranos Post

I just finished reading this blog post on the final episode of Sopranos. It is really fascinating, check it out if you watched the last episode. In this writer's opinion (the guy's name is Bob Harris who is famous for appearing on Jeopardy! and writing a funny book about it) the ending is quite obvious. The post has become quite famous in internet land so it is filled with updates and the like. But I think he nailed it on the head.

so here's my beef: The Sopranos draws a big crowd and it is definitely more of an intellectual, savvy crowd than most other television. Having read the post, I can see that Mr. Harris' theory must certainly be correct. But if the viewership, despite its sophistication and expertise in all things pop-culture doesn't get it? It doesn't work!

If The Sopranos were a series given to such cryptic story-telling, we'd have been looking for those things (or would have simply given up seasons ago because that's too much work...)or at least expected to be missing a bunch of "clues". The ending was too much of a deviation from the usual story-telling style that viewers were just sort of left in confusion...

Finally, I think that oftentimes writers, directors deliberately confuse viewers to allow certain kinds of people to feel smug and superior when the "figure it out". I want my entertainment to be challenging but I've already taken the GRE (and killed it, by the way). That's not what I want from television.

I don't think there was anything too confusing about it, most people I talked to seemed to assume that Tony got whacked. And I think the many layers of symbology in the final scene are brilliant but not necessary in understanding the intent.
