That's my Alma Mater!

It looks like there have been some racist notes left for the Ball State University coach basketball under the door of his office. It appears that the coach and his staff broke some NCAA rules by attending voluntary off-season team workouts (a dumb rule if you ask me). Some idiots took it upon themselves to direct racial slurs via cowardly notes towards the black coach.

It's sad but I can't say I'm surprised. There was a lot of homophobic hate graffiti left around campus on more than one occasion when I was there.

It sucks to have institutions you care for singled out for that kind of attention. I know lots of really fine Ball State alums who are neither racist nor homophobes.

Not many of them are Jewish, either... ;-)

You and Carrie are both such exemplary living proof of the caliber of people to emerge from that school. It annoys me that for many people, this incident will be the only association they have for Ball State.

You hit the nail on the head kathy. Do me a favor, and not just kathy and lyman, but anyone else that reads this remark. Watch your favorite news channel and take the time to keep tabs on how many of the top stories involve murder, suicide, rape or drunk driving. I would say a good guess is that 75% of the "lead" stories that they go with involve a few of the above mentioned. Of course those people outside the midwest will see this and alway associate Ball State with racism. It would be safe to say that something like this is happening or has happen at every major college in Indiana. Leave it to the local new stations to keep this in the spotlight until something juicier comes along.

Well I will say it is news worth mentioning and having attended Ball State and seen similar ignorance displayed first hand I can attest that it isn't an isolated incident.

If people want to read the story and generalize the entire campus as 'racist' then that is their own ignorance showing.

I'm more interested in making sure there's nothing in the culture of the university that encourages this kind of crap.

And what do you think about that, Lym? Do you think there is something there that facilitates hate?

I surely hope not. I just keep hearing the song, "Ball of Confusion" (The Temptations) when I think of it. Its a shame that some parts of our culture still can't let go of the hate...

I'm not sure if there even is anything, maybe BSU is unlucky enough to get more than its fair share of idiots. But I will say that BSU isn't as diverse as other campuses I've been to, maybe that adds to it?
