I just noticed something odd about the Jason Moran disc I was talking about ealier--it's signed. I bought it used. The front cover says:
"First baby born!
Thanks Matt!
JAMO"
... along with his signature. Crazy, huh? Who would go through the trouble of getting a signature only to sell the disc back to a used CD shop?
And further more, what the hell doesn "First baby born!" mean?
Moran takes the moniker JAMO from the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat who used the graffitti tag SAMO before he became a famous painter. Basqiuat is my favorite painter. He was a tragic genius. His work is really primal and personal, almost like jazz improvisations. Moran has a song on the record called "JAMO meets SAMO." Another reason to like this guy.

Yeah, that book is great--it's one of the ones I find myself rereading.
Plus, he dug comics. That generally makes someone OK in my book.
Also, the movie isn't bad, even if Julian Schnabel had to make a fake character to insert himself into the film. Then again, that was Gary Oldman's character, so he's forgiven. -

Good to know you dig that book. It's my favorite biography I've ever read.
And the movie was pretty good. But like most biopics it was more PIC than BIO.
I have an independant movie on DVD called "Downtown 82" that JMB stars in. It's pretty weird and pretty hard to follow, but there's an interview with him on the extras that is fascinating. - 10:14 PM
